Opened for the first time on February 3, 2003, Morgado Golf Course has today consolidated its status as a benchmark for golfers. It is a challenging course for those taking their first steps in the sport and for more experienced players looking to test or perfect their technique.
Surrounded by nature and set in a valley in the inland Algarve, the Morgado golf course has 18 holes and the card features a PAR of 73 strokes. Its course has the characteristics of a links course - with flat fairways and Scottish-inspired bunkers - but instead of being next to the sea like traditional links, it is inserted in a parkland area. Currently, the Clube do Morgado Golf Course has around 200 active members.
For Jorge Papa, director of Morgado Golf Course: "It's been 20 years since the day when, at the entrance to the Clubhouse, we posted the 'Open' sign on a simple A4 sheet. That was how we announced the opening of Morgado, without pomp or circumstance. The access to the golf course was through a dirt road that crossed the estate, and the 'tender' field anticipated a lot of work until it reached the place where it is recognized today, among the good national golf courses. Since then, a lot has happened. We have hosted three Portuguese Opens, various events on the Portuguese Golf Federation calendar and many other prestigious tournaments on the amateur calendar. Congratulations are due not only to the course itself, but also to the whole team that opened it 20 years ago and is still here, infecting all those who have joined us in the meantime, with the same energy and enthusiasm, in the spirit of improving every day".
For three consecutive years (2017, 2018 and 2019) Morgado Golf Course has hosted the historic Portuguese Open, in addition to various PGA Portugal and Portugal Pro Golf Tour events. It has also hosted several amateur-level tournaments of the Portuguese Golf Federation (Absolute National Championship and National Club Championship), and hosted several social tournaments.
Besides the Morgado Golf Course there is another course, the Álamos Golf Course, also with 18 holes, with PAR of 71 strokes, but with a shorter length of course. In addition to these two courses, there are other facilities that together make up the Morgado Golf Resort, the Clubhouse (restaurant and bar), Pro-shop (golf shop), Golf Academy and an accommodation unit (NAU Morgado Golf & Country Club), for which it has received international recognition in recent years: in 2021 the seventh place in the category 'Best Value Golf Resorts in Continental Europe', and presence in the top 100 of the 'Best Golf Resorts in Continental Europe' at the end of 2022 - two distinctions awarded by Today's Golfer, one of the most read and prestigious golf magazines in the world.
Commemorative initiatives designed for the players of Morgado Golf Course
To mark its twentieth anniversary, on February 3, Friday, there will be a special raffle in which all golfers who play at Morgado Golf Course on that day can participate. Two vouchers for two night's stay in a double room on half board with two green fees and buggy rental will be awarded. Also on the anniversary day, the price of the buggies will be especially 20 euros, instead of the usual 50 euros. This day will also include a birthday cake-sharing ceremony at 15h00.
